Great Lakes Bay Region Fishing Report

January 25th, 2024

1-17-24 Saginaw Bay
Ice production update for Saginaw Bay. The winds have died down, and snow has stopped in the Bay region. Below, normal temperatures have things locking up fast. Every day, more areas will become accessible. At this time, fishing has been limited to the cuts and shallow areas. These areas can have some excellent fishing opportunities. The blue gills and crappie don't move around much. The perch, however, can be tough to locate. Once you're on them, it can be lights out. These perch can be found in as little as 2 feet of water. Persistence and networking is the key to getting on them. Perch can be found just about everywhere in the shallows of Saginaw Bay. Generally, the bait shops know first. Eventually, it gets onto the internet. These perch move fast and are rather skittish in waters so skinny. By the time you hear about it, the bite is toast. Another option would be to contact an
ice guide. At this time, I am aware of one company that guides perch. Captain Andrew Hendrickson of Northstar Fishing Adventures had good successes on the first day out. 1/16/23. Hopefully, this coming weekend we will have enough ice to get deeper for the walleye. Please use extreme caution when navigating on Saginaw Bay. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Dates are available from now until March. Saginaw Bay is known for walleye. Which often have a short season due to their offshore haunts. Perch fishing most years starts in December and some years lasts until April.
