2-28-24 Holland Lake trout fishing from GrandHaven - South Haven is what I am most familiar with and most important tip is water temps when it comes to spring. Yesterday we were seeing 33-34 degrees and found a small area near the mouth of the port that was reading out 35-36 degrees so with that warmer water brings the bait into that area. Yesterday’s bait was 3” shad. Cold water I typically start with thin fins and small spoons. My preference for spring fishing Lake trout, steelhead, coho and browns are a mixed combination of Standard & Mini size spoons including Stingers, Warrior Flutter spoons, and Silver streak mini’s. Colors can vary as water clarity plays a role however you can’t go wrong with your orange a gold / copper patterns or even glow mini spoons with dots. Speed is always a make it or break it when it comes to fishing the Great Lakes but when your fishing cold cold water February through March I have noticed guys troll way to slow around 1.9-2.2 GPS speed. We are fishing 20-40’ of water so I am not concerned at this time about ball speed. 2.4-2.6 when running spoons in the spring can be very productive year after year for all species and what I personally suggest. Thanks to Justin Schuiling for the great report
