What started out as a tough year has since turned into a very exceptional one over the last few weeks. Lately, the fishing has been excellent across the state in both large and small tributaries. I’ve been on the Big Manistee river primarily and we’ve been having great success.
Fishing sections of river that yield good gravel runs have been most productive. Even the majority of the fresh chrome fish are heading upriver to the gravel without stopping. I’ve been fishing Tippy dam down to the first few bends and haven’t had to travel much to find good fishing. I’ll typically start out floating spawn under a bobber in the morning and then will switch to jigs and beads once the bite slows. Giving the fish something different and changing up constantly is crucial; especially during times with heavy fishing pressure. Anglers bottom bouncing beads, spawn, stone flies and other small nymphs have also been doing very well.
With the late winter we’ve had, it’s backed up our spring run by several weeks. Typically, things would be wrapping up for us right around now but I expect there to be another 2-3 weeks or more of solid fishing. The size and health of our steelhead is outstanding as well, which is great for our future. I’ve seen more 12+ pound steelhead landed this year than ever. I’m excited to see how the rest of the season turns out and expect some great fishing to be had ahead of us. Good luck to all you anglers out on the water! Let me know if need anything else from me. If it’s to long feel free to edit it however you’d like.
