South Central Lower Peninsula Area Fishing Report

March 2nd, 2021

For many of us especially down here in South Central Lower, this is gonna be (or should be) our last week on the hard water. This can be a great time of the year to get out and enjoy some phenomenal fishing! Last ice fish are usually aggressive and active, also temperatures are typically a lot more enjoyable as well. Perfect for getting the family out and enjoying some good fishing without getting cold. With that comes responsibility and extreme caution when fishing late in the season. Please use a spud carry ice picks, stay away from areas that just don't look good and give some room around inlets or moving water. Typically at the last ice conditions I'm gonna target shallow weed flats. Why? Because the shallow weed flats are getting more light penetration and is usually the first water to start warming attracting the bait and the fish first. That being said you need to pay attention to not only deteriorating ice on the surface but also below the surface as well. Fishing a 3-4mm tungsten with a micro plastic imitating small bugs or larvae are great to use. I prefer Roastin Roaches and J-Spikes from Judge's Jaw Jackers. They hold up for plenty of fish without rebaiting allowing you to get right back down to pluck another out. Faster cadence as well... Remember, at this point these fish have seen a lot of fishing pressure at this point so mix it up and show them something different. So please use caution, common sense, safety, take a spud bar, ice picks, and make sure people know where you are and when you plan to be home. Good luck out there!!!
