Lake Erie Shores and Islands Ohio Area Fishing Report

July 26th, 2021

Perch fishing has officially taken off on the western basin of Lake Erie. We limited out on a very nice grade of fish two mornings in a row. A 10'' average the first morning brought us 26# of perch at the fish cleaners for 60 fish. This is a fantastic average size for the western basin. The second morning our average size was closer to 9''. We are fishing in the firing range area in Oak Harbor, Ohio. The perch are scattered everywhere right now from the Toledo water intake all the way to the Lake Erie Islands. Perch can be found in all depths right now. We found them anywhere from 20' of water to 31' of water. Straight line perch rigs and perch fly rigs took our perch. We used both emerald shiners and golden shiners. Whole minnows and cut pieces both worked well. Running a snelled hook off the bottom sinker snap was key the second morning. We also ran out for an evening walleye trip after getting our perch limit. We filled the cooler with walleye quickly. The evening bite has been best for us when fishing for walleye lately in the far western basin. We targeted 26-28ft of water and trolled at 2.3-2.6mph. Crankbaits and spoons both caught fish. Lots of 16-20'' fish right now, with a lot of short walleye mixed in. Good luck out there!
