Cadillac Michigan Area Fishing Report

May 5th, 2020

Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell.
Up until just a couple days ago water temps were just barely 40 degrees. Things started warming up this weekend and we're starting to see the fish turn on. Walleye fishing has been great. The DNR has been doing a fantastic job with their stocking program and you can really see it paying off in our lakes. Right now most are using shallow running crank baits like Rapala’s. Anglers can catch them right from shore during the evening and after dark hours. Fishermen in boats have been getting them during the day as well in slightly deeper water from 7-10ft as well. With the slowly warming water temps Crappie have started to move in from being suspended in deep water closer to the shallows as they start staging to spawn. In just the last couple days many anglers have been able to find them just below the surface. The most productive way to catch them is just fishing a small minnow under a bobber just a couple feet below the surface. It’s an easy technique and a great way to introduce newer anglers to the sport of fishing. As the water starts to warm up, smaller artificial lures like small jigs can also work well. Even some of the Walleye fishermen have been catching some on accident with their Rapala’s, some as big as 15”.
