Muskegon County Area Fishing Report

June 7th, 2021

6-7-21 Muskegon area
With the warm consistent weather the river fishing has now focused on the summer bite. River smallmouth are done spawning and looking to feed on crawfish and small fry. The best places to target these post spawn fish in the river are the calm areas on inside bends, look for underwater boulders and old mill logs to hold the biggest fish. The top water bite will be on shortly with the rising water temps. The big fish will be holding tight to shore near cover awaiting mice, frogs and other creatures that approach the water for a mid day drink. Those running the river in boats be extra mindful, most of our west Michigan rivers are at record low flow.
Small tributaries and headwaters ate still producing nice brook and brown trout catches in the early morning and evening. Evening hatches are starting to come on strong but wont last long with the sudden increase in temperatures. If you're a fan of spin casting try casting small poppers and torpedoes upstream near grassy banks before dark, big trout are looking up to feed and usually they cant deny something that looks like a frog or mouse!
Thanks to my friend Eric Richards for the awesome report!
